Transformers the Movie: Damn You Micheal Bay.
Ok I need to preface this a bit, the following is my opinion and its not really gonna change, the rant is also pretty caustic so anyone who would be upset by ragging on the "film" that’s just come out is better off just walking away, but for my own sanity, my own beliefs and my own soul I have to shout into the void on this one.

    UberAlex Asked
    1. Do you see yourself living in Ireland forever?

I can't predict every twist and turn my life will take, but for the moment certainly, I have fairly deep roots in the place and though the county and its leadership repeatedly drives me bananas my friends are here and I would be hard pressed to leave my family and my home.

    2. What's your ideal job?

One where I dispense hard won knowledge to people who are at least nominally interested. Oh and have a decent amount of time for myself, I'm very much fueled by my passions and pastimes.

    3. If you had kids, would you introduce them to roleplaying?

Yes simply because its helped me such much in my ow life and I'd like my children to understand the things that drive me.

    4. Favourite non-sci-fi, non-fantasy author?

I have a fondness for the men who rail desperately against the system so probably the late Dr Thompson, but on many a deary Sunday I've made time for Gene Kerrigan.

    5. What do you make of the new SLA stuff?

Its a brave effort by a bunch of genuine fans, whether the serious playerbase for SLA is still there is as yet up in the air and since this is a splinter fandom of SLA we are going to get a very personal interpretation which is always going to grate a bit. On the wholew I'm poisitve but they havn't tackled the hard stuff yet like their take on Integration 20, the big Soft Companies, the albatross of the Truth or the whole powder keg of a rules revision. Its sadly a time will tell deal, and I as always begin optimistic.

This is the drill: leave a comment and I will ask you five questions, you answer them in your journal and make the same offer to your friends.

    The D Endeth?
No posting to the Gamers forum eh...
Well while I work on my last few pre christmas college projects might as well fill you in on the D.

Tenacous D was an interesting if uneven experience, and I'm going to as I mentioned to Ice Cream talk about the opening act first. The comic was as I figured a comic whose schtick is being a terrible comic, nonetheless the problem is that thats it. He's terrible. The joke only kinda works if you know beforehand and even then its still an uncomfortable half hour, I don't really want to watch something thats deliberately not funny hence me avoiding BBC in general and most of Gamers on puropse (ZING! :) )
Heres the wiki in any case.
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neil_Hamburger
Teh hour break between the end of the comics act and the start of the D was also odd, spoke of somethign not going right. We half expected an ambulance to blow into the building and haul off half the D.

    The rest of the show?

Well as always with the D its a mixture of teh AWESOME and teh suck. The classic tunes were all hit including an encore for Tribute that blew the fucking roof off the barn we were in (RDS Simmonscourt, a low rent Horse trading post) Notable aswell was their cover of Flash. AWH-HAH!
The other psrt of the show is a bit of the Pick of Destiny film/album taken on the road.

Now the Pick for me is a bit of an odd expereince and I pretty much finally figured it out. The Pick of Destiny badly wants to be the Blues Brothers, it burns to be the Blues Brothers, it would sign up with pretty much anyone to be the Blues Brothers.

But it isn't the Blues Brothers. Whether through creative shortfall, acting limitations or the rumoured poor public response/Studio Edict the Pick is instead a bit of a Tenacious rehash. It basically covers the Ds awesome while adding nothing to it. Bizarrely I think the whole multi media approach film/album/tour would be all the stronger if it was more about building Tenacious D as an insane Rock Opera, a dizziying battle to craft the ultimate band. But its not. Its a do over for the fans and I'm still very glad to have seen the D live, I did rock hard last night but I can't help feel thats it for them, thats the whole shebang, the last hurrah of the D. Telling was the majour song absent last night was the Pick of Destiny title track, otherwise the back catlogue was more or less covered.

But still I rocked to Tribute live, can't say fairer than that.

Con also spotted a bear sodden 5 euro note, but was too proud to pick it up, Teh Crapple was not :)

    Are you ready for this...
Okay with my duties as Big Papa Eoin complete its time to finish this up.

    Saturday:
I arrive at 10.00am at the con becuase of an odd quirk of mine, if I'm told to be somewhere at time X, I will arrive at time X...
Due to me being LATE I find big burly men like Hugh "Old Man" Lardner and Rake Creaner have taken all the XL Comittee shirts leaving me with a medium...
Laying aside the fact that I havn't been a medium in about 7 years...its just quicker to say this is all Micks fault.
Ok given that I'm LARP guy AND the writer of the L5R LARP Iset to work readying the LARP. In this Jonathan is really helpful and cuts the set up time in half.

At this point the elusive Simon Lucas arrives to much hugging and general aclamation.
Phew, one guest alive at least. Savage and himslef then headed for Shane.

Ok now I run my L5r LARP, much madness, injokery, paranoia and complex plots ensue. Best of show are Yan playing against two very big problems, a language barrier and the character is one of Emmetts, Liam Miller for getting exactly what he wanted (Kyoso resummonable) while sitting in a corner looking serene and Jonathan for most manic energy as BAYUSHI AKAI, STUDENT OF THE DARK SWORD OF BITTER LIES!
Twas much fun even though the Band of the Jade Blade managed to get everything wrong with the seals. Though everyone was great I would have loved to see Uber and Emmett playing their old characters again...another LARP methinks.

Meanwhile Conor was running his marathon Impeial Guard Marvel RPG and damning all calls for time management and letting people play evening slots.

At this point Shane arrived with tales of landing with flaps down and other chaos. Which did my heart a world of good.

I then ran Evernight, with a grop of Don, Colm L, Shane Lucy Hensley and Simon Lucas. The scenario thoguh some doubt was expressed ran well universly and I was pleased...and a touch intimidated by all these veteren players...and designers :)

Then Shane asked for some traditonal Irish cuisine...
    I responded "...what potatoes?"
Luckily Michelle knew a that the Oval does an Irish menu so myself, Don, Shane and Simon went there and had Chicken and Ham. Some interesting game playing/designing chat was had and I got to display my complete lack of Beer Lore.

Then we had our Pub Quiz and despite all calls of foul and 15 memebers, Table 5 only had about 7 players on it...:) Well Shane hardly counts, he's only a Noted Industry Figure. We battled hard and everybody contributed and it came down to Alex being more athletically inclined than Gar for the win.

Flush with victory we headed for Fibbers and Karoke, I had to bug out a little early but much fun was had...and of course there was "ANIMAL HEAD!" which is now the universal reason to not attempt to woo a woman anywhere near cam people...or Norton.

    right to-morrow...SUNDAY!

and my Leprecon props and slops.

    and Grahams Star Wars game.

    and bbq?

    Fear and Loathing in Leprecon
Be warned this is a rant based on Leprecon in the Mind of Eoin Burke, as such nobody is permitted to get annoyed. BOO-YAH!

Ok Leprecon has come and gone and I'm a fool for carrying on.

Seems about right, well on thursday we had our "post mortem"/Gers party...
Well at least people managed to greatly annoy me so I'll post in anger. Seeing as I'm likely never going to be part of a con like that again, burning my bridges is freely avalible. Besides nobody reads this blog so I'm laughing.

    The Run Up:
I started out wanting to do one thing at Leprecon, write and run an L5R Larp that wraps up my campaign from 2 years ago and give more poor lost players some closure. As Graham is a friend and running RPGs/LARPs that was no problem.
Then they were looking for another RPG and somebody to write a Song of Ice and Fire RPG, as at that point I didn't trust Creaner, I volunteered to do that aswell, no problem right? I mean in his prime Nick Hugins would have 3-4 games art every con?

Then one night we went out to Wagamamas...and people got drunk...and Graham asked me to be LARP guy...I said no, so he asked Ice Cream Cian...ICC is a great guy but he is often very busy with work, so I voluntered to split the detail and we'd each do one day.

About now any experineced comittee person would start to get worried about overburdening...but I forged on and nobody else stopped me so I went on ahead.

OK at Scheduled Meeting #7 (Actual Meeting #2) the issue of guests came up and it had been revealed that our overtures to WotC had been rejected and we had no guest. There was much humming and hawing and a general sort of sulky "Well e don't want a guest anyway" vibe, when I did something stupid.

    I spoke up:
" I might be able to Shane Lucy Hensley"
Of course befitting my status nobody bothered to listen...except Graham who pointed out what I said.

There was a general...sure why not response. So I went out an put my small amount of Pinnacle Cred. on the line and got in touch with Shane who remains as ever a nice guy and agreed to do it at the last minute. So great I had it sor-ted!
Except for some reason I was now also Guest Guy...As a side effect of this I ditched ASoIaF and replaced it with Savage Worlds: Evernight in honour of Shane.
If Aidan or anyone had any concerns before now is where they should have told me to cop onto myself, as I was writing 1/8th of the LARP/RPG content, running LARPS AND Guest Wrangling. But in my own head I felt I had a handle on it and nobody said anything so I plowed on ahead. Everything was fine UNLESs something went wrong.

    Thursday Night: Something goes wrong.
I get an email from Shane telling me his flights been snowed under, and he won't arrive until Saturday, afternoon...this means I can't pick him up from the airport, and somebody else will have to do it as I'm running L5R.
But at this stage I had Evernight written asnd L5R largely done so I wasn't TOO bothered, Creaner was being a cock about actually doing stuff like booking rooms, but I guessed we'd sort it out on the day. I would like to single out Sandra now for great praise for really helping me out of a very tricky situation where my mighty intellect failed me. You have my gratitude. *deep bow*

    Friday: Dead-Line
By now nearly everthing was ready, lots of people headed off to the Cam and I went home to put the finishing touches on my L5R game...to find a mail from Shane Lacy Hensley telling me that a friend of his Simon Lucas was arriving in Dublin at 10.30 and could he be met as originally Shane was going to. We had no flight details, point of origin or phone number...I desperately fired off emails, and inadvertantly moblised Eamon Honan to trudge around Dublin Airport at midnight waking up drunks looking for Simon. BAH! not my best result...oh and apparently Dublin Airport won't announce public passengers...though Alex says thats just becuase I don't support Fianna Fail and its what I deserve for not supporting the one true rulers of this great little nation.
    again
    BAH!

ok to-morrow we'll do the con itself.
